Living in Rijswijk
Rijswijk is a peaceful town located just a short distance from The Hague. And although it’s close enough to access everything the bigger city has to offer, it’s also filled with plenty of its own amenities, attractions, and charm. Rijswijk’s over 55,000 residents enjoy the area’s green spaces, shopping hotspots, and cultural landmarks. The town’s convenient connections to the neighbouring cities of The Hague, Leiden, Delft, and Rotterdam are an added plus!
Everyday Life
At the heart of this district lies an old town centre with a cobbled square and a 16th-century church. But just north of this you’ll find the rustic Herenstraat, which is buzzing with life. Here, locals can find streets lined with various shops, bakeries and cosy (gezellig) cafés and restaurants. If you are looking instead for a place to exercise and unwind, there are several parks in the area to explore. Take a walk in Rijswijkse Bos, a forest dotted with beautiful drooping willow trees. You could also organise a family afternoon outing to Von Fisenne Park, a nature area containing a farm for children to visit (kinderboerderij). To add to its attractions, the town also has its own museum (Museum Rijswijk), theatre (Rijswijkse Schouwburg), shopping centre (Bogaard Stadscentrum), and family amusement park (Drievliet).
Working and Education
Rijswijk is home to the second-largest EU institution (by number of employees): the European Patent Office. Their office building houses over 2,500 employees. The energy companies Wintershall and Petrogas are also based in the town. And tech companies such as Huawei and Worth Internet Systems have moved to the nearby Businesspark Hoornwijck.
For schooling options, you can find international schools in both Delft and The Hague – both of which are easily reachable by public transport, car, or bike from Rijswijk. Alternatively, there are many local schools offering Dutch education to children of all ages.
Healthcare
There are several local emergency medical care options on offer. Kruispunt Health Centre and Haagweg Medical Centre both provide essential services such as general practitioners (huisartsen), dieticians, physiotherapy, maternity care, and much more.
Transport Links
Rijswijk is connected to the region, and the rest of the country, by a convenient and efficient public transport network made up of trams, buses, and trains. The local train station (Station Rijswijk) can be found just five minutes from the town’s centre. For those travelling by car, the A4 motorway sits at Rijswijk’s borders and makes for an easy commute to other towns and cities.
