Museums
For those who are into modern and contemporary art, you might be interested in Museum Voorlinden - where you can take a walk at the bottom of a swimming pool without getting wet! Kunstmuseum Den Haag could also be an option for art lovers; here you discover the largest collection of Mondriaan paintings, but fashion lovers will also find their happiness by visting the temporary DIOR exhibition. The extensive collection of dresses and fashion items is truly mesmerising. Or perhaps you can visit the Escher Museum for a different kind of modern art experience. The intriguing drawings of the world-famous artist, Escher can be seen in the former Winter Palace at the Lange Voorhout.
For the elder children, one of the oldest buildings in the city centre houses the Prison Gate Museum ‘Gevangenpoort’. It tells the history of crime and punishment in the international city of peace and justice. For the little daredevils amongst us, you can visit the torture chamber which houses the biggest collection of instruments of punishment in the Netherlands. The museum is listed in Lonely Planet’s 50 Museums to Blow Your Mind guide.
The Hague is of course also famously home to the Girl with a Pearl Earring painting at the prestigious Mauritshuis. The museum houses the Royal Cabinet of Paintings consisting of 854 objects, mostly Dutch Golden Age paintings. The collection contains works by some of the Netherlands' most famous artists - including Johannes Vermeer and Rembrandt van Rijn.
Other activities
If the Spring break period grants us some nice and sunny weather, you can visit one of the many petting zoos or 'stadsboerderij' in The Hague. If you are in for an adrenaline ride, the family theme park Drievliet could be a great option, or perhaps you want to learn how to ski or snowboard without the long journey to the Alps; that's possible too! Visit Snowworld in Zoetermeer or de Uithof in The Hague.
Not feeling that adventurous? The Hague is also home to various parks including the Zuiderpark which has a petting zoo of its own, along with spots to play football, skate, barbecue and more. There's also the Scheveningse Bosjes which provide a wonderful nature experience, filled with unique shrubbery, walking trails, playgrounds and picnic spots.
