Living in Voorschoten
Voorschoten is a village and municipality located between the larger cities of The Hague and Leiden and the town of Wassenaar. Its 25,000 residents enjoy its rich history, green spaces, great transport links, and overall peaceful atmosphere. In Voorschoten’s old town, you can find plenty of beautiful, centuries-old buildings, and the famous Duivenvoorde Castle. This family-run estate dates back to 1226, attracting both local and international tourism.
Everyday Life
Voorschoten’s charming ‘village’ feel and abundance of greenery make it a popular residential area for those looking for a slower pace of life. Yet, the area’s proximity to the cities of The Hague and Leiden means that the hustle and bustle of city life is never too far away. This unique mix of suburb and city has attracted many expatriate families to the area, including many British nationals. In fact, it’s home to many families in general, with over half of homes in the area classed as single-family households (eengezinswoningen). In the town centre, you’ll find a number of essential shops such as supermarkets, pharmacies, hairdressers, and bakeries. There are also several local restaurants, bars, and cafes. For sport and leisure activities, locals can access a range of recreational facilities such as the swimming pool (Zwembad Het Wedde), golf course (Golfbaan Het Wedde), and several sports clubs.
Working and Education
Located along the Rotterdam-to-Amsterdam railway route, Voorschoten is ideally situated for people working in the surrounding cities of The Hague, Leiden, and Delft. The town also has a successful local economy which includes both tourism and retail. For schooling, there are several primary and secondary schools in the district to choose from, including the senior school campus of The British School in the Netherlands. The American School of The Hague is also nearby in Wassenaar.
Healthcare
Despite its small size, Voorschoten houses many healthcare facilities. These include doctors (huisartsen), therapists, opticians, and nutritionist clinics. In the neighbouring city of Leiden, the region’s biggest hospital complex, Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), can be easily accessed.
Transport Links
Voorschoten is extremely well-connected to the surrounding region, either by car or public transport (OV – openbaar vervoer). Voorschoten train station is situated close to the town’s centre and offers frequent services to The Hague, Leiden, and Rotterdam (approximately every 15 minutes).
