How does it work? - Housing in the Netherlands

Published

If you plan on moving to the Netherlands, it's always important to have a plan. Regardless of where you came from, finding housing in the Netherlands is probably quite different from what you're used to. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and has emerged as a very appealing destination for internationals and international students alike. The demand is high - and the Netherlands has become a very difficult place to find a home. This difficulty is exacerbated in July-September and from January-February when students and researchers arrive for the new academic year or exchange periods.
Especially in the ‘Randstad’ area - the Netherlands metropolitan area of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and of course, The Hague.

Start searching early, and make sure that your housing situation is adequate upon arrival. Keep in mind the different available housing options - whether it is a short-stay temporary accommodation, long term rental options, or purchasing a property. These options can be explored through various methods by utilising search portals, housing associations, or real estate agents. A housing permit may also be required for your desired property, and this should be organised by the tenant or property owner appropriately. It is important to know what is needed beforehand, as well as your rights throughout the process. For more information please watch our short animation.

These aspects are important to take into account when house hunting. Knowing as much information beforehand will prepare you well for the road ahead. For more information, please visit the housing section of our website.
