Museums

One of the oldest buildings in the city centre houses the Prison Gate Museum ‘Gevangenpoort’. It tells the history of crime and punishment in the international city of peace and justice. For the little daredevils amongst us, you can visit the torture chamber which houses the biggest collection of instruments of punishment in the Netherlands. The museum is listed in Lonely Planet’s 50 Museums to Blow Your Mind guide.

For those who are into modern and contemporary art, you might want to take a walk on the bottom of a swimming pool in Museum Voorlinden without getting wet! Or visit the Escher Museum for a different modern art experience. The intriguing drawings of the world-famous artist, Escher can be seen in the former Winter Palace at Lange Voorhout.
